Neutra VDL

Richard and Dion Neutra Studio / Residence in Silverlake

Friends of VDL and Cal Poly Pomona’s College of Environmental Design have launched a joint campaign to Restore the Neutra VDL compound, to fund its ongoing Maintenance, and to institute new on-site Programming.

Significance of the VDL compound:

VDL was the private residence of the Neutra family.  It is on the National Register of Historic Places and is Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Historic Monument #640.
The 1930’s, 40’s and 60’s phases of VDL illustrate the design evolution and experimentation of the Neutra firm.
It was able to accommodate three households and Neutra’s studio/office.
The Neutras’ office at VDL launched the careers of many renowned architects.
VDL served as a gathering place for important scientific, artistic, political and religious figures.
VDL set trends, still relevant today:
– How to achieve high-density, affordable mixed-use of a small site
– How to design landscape for indoor/outdoor living
– How to emphasize the sights, sounds and smells of nature
– How to accommodate climate through design
– How to use sustainable materials and technologies
– How biological and social sciences can inform design
